I had been given the description of the party, but your blog helped it come alive for me. And the pics are great. My daughter is about 4 yrs behind Roger, and now I too feel the pressure to provide a birthday experience with that much fun, chance for learning & experience, outdoor enjoyment, and creativity. Bob, Cici, Bits and Deidre set a sky-high bar, as you note. The work that went into planning, preparing and executing this giant shindig must have been huge. Many, many thanks to all who toiled.
[I'd like to keep it all positive, but I just have to say...I wonder if the person with the opposing viewpoint had maybe had more opportunity to have experiences like this one in their youth, they might have been more at home with all the party activities and their inherent physicality, excitement and perhaps slight odor. I'd also bet money that when almost any 7 yr old boy is handed a piece of cake (sans plate) one of the last things on his mind would be a lack of dignity.]
-By ValentineAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1121771608247678439.post-7640982850435101062011-12-06T19:59:18.393-05:002011-12-06T19:59:18.393-05:00Great Blog! Getting cake and icing all over your hands and face is a rare treat, and great fun for a 7 year old, I'm betting! Imagine not getting fussed at for making one HUGE mess!!!

Bits and CiCi are close friends, and I can vouch for the fact that both kids and parents couldn't have been in safer, better, or more knowledgeable hands. I'm sure that a grand time was had by all, or most all!!! Samson, the "dire, wolf-sized" shepherd, is just so unmanageable that he cowers to a POODLE! And I should have been more careful to blame the father involved for the plates, the sticks, and especially the incredibly bad smell that came from inside the gourds when they smashed in the trees at the bottom of the cliff.

Except for the Dire-Wolf-sized shepard that only Chris could handle, that wasn't the father's fault.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1121771608247678439.post-56391502474819983642011-12-06T10:10:30.397-05:002011-12-06T10:10:30.397-05:00May I offer an opposing view point?

Seven year old boys were ENCOURAGED to pick up sticks, although it happened that those sticks were old okra stalks and sunflower-seed-clubs.

Fortunately the children didn't throw the gourds out of the "forts" until after the parents all made it out of the line of fire.

A lot of emphasis was made on boards and mountain trails, but nobody brought plates. How often have your children been handed a piece of cake with no plate, napkin, fork, or dignity?

I can agree that the children and parents certainly seemed to enjoy it, and that may be the most important part, but I have seldom seen a father run as much or as far keeping a party together.

Thank you, Chris, a great write up on a great blog.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1121771608247678439.post-74329108745760578372011-12-05T20:39:41.154-05:002011-12-05T20:39:41.154-05:00Wonderful description.
